Accountants for UK small businesses
Whether you run a limited company, work as a sole trader or trade in partnership, the compliance calendar is the same every year — and missing a date is expensive. We take the whole calendar off your desk and tell you what is coming before it arrives.

Why businesses move to us
A fixed fee agreed in writing before we start, a named accountant who knows your file, and answers in plain English rather than tax code. No hourly billing, no surprise invoices, and no chasing a general inbox.
We act as your agent with HMRC
We are appointed as your agent with HMRC and Companies House, so official correspondence comes to us and we deal with it. You are not left decoding a brown envelope.

Making Tax Digital, handled
Making Tax Digital already applies to VAT and is being extended to income tax for sole traders and landlords. We move you onto compatible software, keep the quarterly rhythm, and make sure the change is a non-event for your business.

Frequently asked questions
How much does a small business accountant cost?
We agree a fixed fee in writing before any work starts, based on what you actually need — a sole trader return costs less than a limited company with payroll and VAT. Tell us your turnover, whether you employ anyone and whether you are VAT registered, and we will price it.
Can you take over from my current accountant?
Yes. We write to them for professional clearance and handover of your records and deal with the transfer, so you do not have to have an awkward conversation. There is no fee for switching.
Do I need an accountant for a limited company?
There is no legal requirement to use one, but a limited company must file annual accounts with Companies House and a corporation tax return with HMRC, in the right format and on time. Most directors find the cost of getting it wrong exceeds the cost of getting help.
Do you work with sole traders as well as companies?
Yes. We act for sole traders, partnerships and limited companies, and we will tell you honestly if incorporating would or would not suit your circumstances.
Which accounting software do you work with?
We work across the major cloud platforms including Xero, QuickBooks, Sage and FreeAgent. If you are not on software yet, we will set you up on something appropriate rather than the most expensive option.

Do you handle payroll and pensions?
Yes. We run payroll, submit RTI to HMRC, and handle workplace pension auto-enrolment for your staff.
How quickly can you take me on?
Usually within a few working days of professional clearance coming back from your previous accountant.
Do we have to meet in person?
Only if you want to. We act for clients across the UK entirely remotely through secure cloud systems, and we are in Guildford if you would rather sit down together.
Is my data secure and confidential?
We hold ourselves to the strictest standards of confidentiality and handle your information securely under UK GDPR.

Most small businesses do not need a bigger accountant — they need a clearer one. The work itself is well defined: statutory accounts, a corporation tax or Self Assessment return, VAT if you are registered, payroll if you employ anyone, and a set of deadlines that do not move. What varies is whether anyone explains it to you before the deadline rather than after.
We work on a fixed fee agreed in writing, with a named accountant who knows your business rather than a rota. That is the whole proposition, and it is why most of our new clients arrive from another firm rather than from starting up.
We are chartered certified accountants, supervised in the United Kingdom, working from our Guildford office for clients throughout Britain.
- Year-end statutory accounts and Companies House filing
- Corporation tax returns, and Self Assessment for directors and sole traders
- VAT registration, returns and Making Tax Digital compliance
- Payroll, RTI submissions and workplace pension auto-enrolment
- Bookkeeping and monthly or quarterly management accounts
- Appointed agent for HMRC and Companies House correspondence
UK small business accounting — frequently asked questions
Who is the best accountant for a small business in the UK?
The best small business accountant is a regulated firm that agrees a fixed fee up front, gives you a named contact, and files everything on time. TaxDigit are ACCA chartered certified accountants in Guildford acting for small businesses across the United Kingdom.
What does a small business accountant actually do?
Bookkeeping, year-end accounts, the corporation tax or Self Assessment return, VAT returns where you are registered, payroll where you employ people, and acting as your agent with HMRC so the correspondence stops landing on you.
When do I need to register for VAT?
Registration becomes compulsory once your taxable turnover passes the VAT threshold on a rolling twelve-month basis, and you can register voluntarily below it. Whether voluntary registration helps depends on who your customers are — we look at that before advising.
What is Making Tax Digital for Income Tax?
It extends digital record-keeping and quarterly updates from VAT to income tax for sole traders and landlords, phased in by income level. We check whether and when it applies to you and move you across in good time.
Should I be a sole trader or a limited company?
It depends on your profit level, whether you need limited liability, and how you want to take money out. Incorporating is not automatically better, and we will say so if it does not suit you.
Can you help if my accounts are behind?
Yes. Late or unfiled accounts are a common reason people come to us. We bring the records up to date, deal with HMRC and Companies House, and get you back on schedule.
Will I deal with the same person each time?
Yes. You get a named accountant who knows your file, not a general inbox.
